CHAPTER 1

Lena stood at the edge of the park, watching as the last of the autumn leaves fluttered to the ground. The air was crisp, her breath visible in the fading light. The bench in front of her had become a quiet sanctuary, a place she visited nearly every evening. But tonight, the silence was different. It was too heavy, too suffocating.

She could still hear his voice in her head, the way it always brought a sense of calm, like a warm blanket on a cold night. David. Her best friend. Her secret love.

They had known each other for years. Their friendship had been built on shared laughter, endless conversations, and an unspoken understanding that neither of them ever dared to confront. They had always been close, but somewhere along the way, Lena’s feelings had deepened. She had fallen for him in a way she hadn’t anticipated, and now, it was too late.

Lena had always been the quiet one, the one who smiled a little too softly, the one who kept her emotions tucked away behind walls of politeness. David, on the other hand, was everything she wasn’t: bold, confident, and unafraid to speak his mind. But he was also kind, compassionate, and always there for her, in ways no one else had ever been.

The truth was, she had known for years. But every time she thought about telling him, something inside her froze. She feared it would ruin everything, that the perfect balance of their friendship would tip over and break into irreparable pieces. And so, she stayed silent, content to watch him from afar, to bask in the small moments they shared, even though they would never be more than that.

Tonight, David was supposed to meet her here. They had planned to spend the evening talking, as they always did. But when he hadn’t shown up, Lena found herself wandering back to this park, to the place where they had shared so many conversations, to relive the memories.

She pulled out her phone, hesitated, then sent a simple text: “I miss you.”

Her phone buzzed a moment later, the message lighting up the screen: “I miss you too.”

But it wasn’t enough. It never was. She wanted more. She had always wanted more.

David had always been there for her, but she had never been able to ask for what she truly wanted from him: his love.

Lena stood up from the bench, her heart heavy. She turned to leave, only to pause when she heard the familiar sound of footsteps behind her. She didn’t need to look; she knew who it was.
“Lena,” David said softly. “I’m sorry I’m late.”

She turned, forcing a smile. “It’s okay. I was just thinking.”

“About what?”

She shook her head, a lump forming in her throat. “Just about… us.”

David stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. “You’ve been distant lately. Is something wrong?”

Lena swallowed, the words on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn’t say them. She couldn’t shatter the fragile world they’d built, not even now. Instead, she shook her head again, pretending everything was fine.

“I’m fine,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

David smiled, a warm, easy smile that made her heart ache. “Okay. But if you ever need to talk, you know where to find me.”

Lena forced a smile back, but the knot in her chest tightened. She had missed her chance. The moment had passed, and she was left with nothing but the quiet ache of unspoken love.
